Ormond was the daughter of Josephine who was a lab technician and John Ormond (a stockbroker) who lived in Epsom, Surrey. Ormond is the second child of five kids born to her parents. She went to private school, first Guildford High School and then Cranleigh School, where early stage performances like Guys and Dolls and My Fair Lady began to draw attention. After a year in art school she was transferred to Webber-Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art and graduated in 1988. Ormond made her debut appearance on British television's 1989 drama Traffik. It revolved around illicit heroin trade between the far East and the streets of Europe. Ormond played the heroin dependent daughter of the character and was also a Home Office minister working to fight heroin imports. The role was praised at the outset.
